As the broadcaster still financially recovers from hosting back-to-back World Hit Festivals, TVH has been forced to reconfigure the way they participate in the WorldVision Song Contest. WorldVision 122 will see the country internally selecting their representative for the second contest in a row, this time under the direction of a new Head of Delegation, Kontok Žëvnječuk.
Žëvnječuk does have previous experience on the TVH Programming Council, having been responsible primarily for weeknight programming from 2021 until the announcement of his promotion to Head of Delegation for WorldVision. The move is seen by some as somewhat strange since he has no prior experience with song contests, though TVH executives cite the success of several programs he approved and scheduled as the reason for the selection.
Žëvnječuk has already caused some commotion since stepping into his new post last week. His first announcement was the internal selection of punk/noise rock supergroup Pink Slime as Hafamarimët’s representatives at WorldVision 122 in Saint Monkey. Although the new band has considerable popular appeal domestically, many see the band and their song Tighten the Noose as an odd choice for WorldVision, falling pretty far outside of typical genre choices for the contest. His response to these concerns has also not instilled confidence in Hafamari WorldVision fans, saying “It’s a risk, but so is any song we could send. We’ve never won this contest. I don’t see the harm in taking a bigger risk.”
Fan reactions on social media were divided. One user commented “okay i love this song already but idk if it’s worldvision vibes,” but another wrote “I think the point of WorldVision is to show the world what kind of music scene we have, and this choice shows we have more than (really good) pop music.” A small subset of fans are concerned about what this left-field decision means for the state of song contests in Hafamarimët. “We’ve already missed a few contests recently for money reasons,” YouTuber WVSCDiman lamented in a live video earlier this afternoon. “So if this flops, this could give TVH another reason to skip more contests. I hope I’m wrong, but I could see how this could potentially lead to another gap like we had between WV34 and WV82.” It’s worth noting that most live comments accused him of overreacting.
No matter the outcome, change is certainly in the air at TVH. Pink Slime have yet to make a public statement about the contest, simply posting the song’s promotional image on their Instagram with the caption “!!!!!” as their selection was announced on last night’s episode of Past Your Bedtime. The band is scheduled to appear on the show on Friday.
